Thanks to Brandy Olson for this guest post on something I had never heard of. But then again, I’m not as smart as my phone these days.
Very soon Near Field Communication (NFC) technology will be widely available on smartphones and in the hands of consumers. Devices equipped with this technology will be able to communicate with other smartphones, tags, and stations using the same. Communicating with vendors, retail store, and other people can become as simple as swiping your phone over another device. Many smart phones already come equipped with an NFC device, which many experts believe will become the standard tool for making payments to readers at cash registers.
Difference Between NFC and QR
The QR Code has been gaining popularity for it’s ability to access information quickly.. Graphic designers can incorporate QR codes onto small packages like business cards and when smartphone users scan them, they receive information about the product or business. NFC technology takes the QR code concept and goes a step further by allowing different devices to communicate with one another. For example, two people meeting at a bar can exchange phone numbers just by clicking their phones together and letting the NFC go to work.
Developing New NFC Strategies
Global communications industry Isobar and Aegis Media Company held a 48 hour eventfrom September 13th to September 15th, 20011 to find out who could come up with the most creative and innovative uses for the technology. While the use of NFC is still in its infancy, Isobar asked programmers, designers and developers to implement as many possible uses for the technology. Judges from Google and several other tech companies were be on hand to determine the winners, which were chosen from more 40 designers. Visit here for results of the competition)
Implementing the NFC Technology
The Tagstand company is offering starter deals on customized NFC tags making it possible to place the specialized codes anywhere and have smartphone users access your website, mobile app, location tracking service, or other social media site. If you are a blogger looking to gain traction in a certain area, posting these stickers around on certain locations and landmarks can give you traffic from areas you’ve never even considered.
If you are interested in placing NFC technology in your business location, you can link to an automatic check-in on social tracking sites and gain professional SEO results through the social media website Twitter without any time spent in front of a computer; making using the social media site a more convenient task than before.”
One of the most talked about uses of the NFC technology is for transactions using nothing but smartphones. Companies like Square and Google are starting services which collate user’s financial data and allow them to make transactions just by swiping their smartphones. Similar technology has existed in the forms of credit card speed passes, but none have combined the use of a mobile device with instant commerce.
The way we communicate and transfer information changes day to day. When the telephone was invented, people thought it would just be used for speaking to each other – now it is replacing wallets.
